Thatch weaving locally knows as Fangi vinun, is the traditional Maldivian art of creating fangi—roofing sheets made from dried coconut palm fronds. Once used widely for roofing and wall covers, today it’s mainly used in resorts for its rustic, aesthetic appeal. Women typically gather the fallen fronds and weave them using large wooden needles and foanu, a strong thread made from coconut husk fiber. This craft reflects the deep-rooted resourcefulness and cultural heritage tied to the coconut palm in island life.
